3 Reasons to Ditch Your Smartphone

Kids dancing around, starving for attention. A wife longing for connection. A man engulfed in his phone. This was me. I’d come home, but I wasn’t there.

Before you start with, “that’s your problem, buddy, I’ve got ironclad self-control”, check your screen time usage on your phone. Do it right now. Is it 1 hour? 3? 5+? Those are hours you’re stealing from your job, your family, or your relationship with God. HOURS out of your day that could be used for dozens of other tasks.

Oh, and if your screen time is less than 1-hour, you got me, but why pay for a smart phone with data that you don’t use?

When I ask if they’d consider ditching their device, you’d think I asked them to cut off their own hand. If only Jesus talked about this…

“Jesus wAs uSInG hyPerBoLe!” You’re right, Jesus wasn’t advocating for self-mutilation, and yes - a blind, no-handed man can still lust. His point is simple: if there’s something in your life that is causing you to sin… get rid of it. For many of you - it’s your phone.

“Did you see my email?”

No, no I did not.

You may call this a cop-out of a third reason, but it’s my favorite reason. No more expectations to respond to work “emergencies” after hours. The freedom of unavailability.

In a world where distractions are a raging river, men should swim vigorously against the current.

The Lord has given us today. He’s given us His creation. He’s given us work to do.

Ditch the smartphone. Let’s get to work.
