Man of God: Intimate Lover (Pt. 3/3)

Woah, what – seriously dude? Intimate Lover?

I know, I know - you were probably hoping for something more on brand like Full of Grit or Dangerous Warrior. Both would be accurate of God’s character and The Man of God; however, I believe a largely ignored trait of our Heavenly Father is His intimate, love for His kids.

King David

Most men I talk with have a difficult time with the word intimacy in relation to God. I think it’s because our culture’s use of the word to describe sex. However, at its root, the meaning is simply to know someone fully and completely. King David: giant slayer, vicious warrior, leader of dangerous men, kingdom builder, intimate lover of God. The man wrote hundreds of songs/poems dedicated to his Father in Heaven. David writes of his relationship with God in Psalm 25:

“The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant” (v.14 ESV.)

The Hebrew for “friendship” in this verse translates to intimate friendship, secret counsel, or sweet fellowship. David absolutely knew what it was like to have a sweet fellowship with God. Throughout David’s rule, he was quick to seek God’s guidance and because of this, David prospered as King. God longs to walk and talk through life with you. His desire is for you to know Him and to know Him is to love Him.

King Jesus

God’s love for you is most clearly portrayed through the life of His Son, Jesus. What could be more intimate than God coming to Earth to live among us? Jesus could’ve been a lone wolf, walking through life perfectly, teaching great crowds, then escaping to be alone. After all, it’s usually easier to live on your own, and free of annoyances and inconveniences. Instead, He chose to deeply invest in His inner circle of men. Travelling with them, eating with them, mourning with them, and teaching in close quarters. Jesus was intentionally intimate – He is still intentionally intimate.

For now, Jesus sits on His throne - waiting to return. Jesus’ goal on Earth was accomplished by giving you access to the Father through His sacrifice on the cross. It’s by believing the message of the Gospel and proclaiming Jesus as Lord that we can begin to understand what it is to have a sweet fellowship with our Heavenly Father.

“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9 ESV.)

Do you have a sweet fellowship with your Heavenly Father?

Here’s a prayer to help you start…

Father, thank you for sending your son, Jesus. Please help me to accept how deeply you love me. Not because of anything I’ve accomplished – but because of what Jesus did for me. Would you please Father me and lead me towards an intimate relationship with you. Amen.
